Becoming One of Us

If you are interested in becoming a USSF Soccer Referee in Columbus, you have come to the right place. Our referees have a fun and rewarding time. We appreciate your interest in joining this great group of people. Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time. We are here to help you!

The first thing you should do is decide whether this is something you will enjoy doing. Come out to the fields and watch a few games. You can visit the local travel club website at www.columbusexpress.com, or contact us and we'll give you schedules for the appropriate level of play.

Once you have decided that this is something you'd like to pursue, follow these easy steps...

1) Decide which USSF entry level course is right for you.

There are basically two entry level USSF courses. The majority of referees begin at grade 8.
Grade 8 Referee- (17 Classroom hours). This class is recommended for youth (at least 14 years old) to adult. This certification will allow you to work appropriate level recreational, competitive, youth and adult games as a a center referee or assistant referee. This certification will provide you with the "most opportunity" as an entry level referee.
Grade 9 Recreational Referee- (9 Classroom hours). This entry level class is recommended for youth, and will certify you to work recreational games at any age level as a center referee. You will gain experience as a center referee working recreational games. Based upon ability and comfort level you may work as an assistant referee on competitive youth games age U14 and younger. This is an entry level class and it is recommended that you move to the next level after one year of certification.

2) Register for a course that will fit with your schedule.

To register for a course visit here
Find a "grade 8" or "entry level" course
Select and register for one of the listed courses

3) Attend the Class. Once you pass the course, you will be given your official USSF Referee badge and can begin immediately. Your USSF Referee number will come from the Chicago state office later (sometimes up to 6 months later).

4) Inform your USSF Assignor that you have passed the course. It's that simple!
